Opinion: Tottenham shouldn’t sign Italian international as backup for Harry Kane

|

According to Tuttosport (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in Giuseppe Rossi and could sign the Italian international as backup for the injured Harry Kane and absent Heung-min Son. The 31-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent years and finds himself a free agent after being released by Genoa last summer.

Rossi’s fitness woes have led Tottenham to consider a ‘pay as you play’ deal, but the Londoners would do well to turn their attentions away from the experienced striker. He can’t be relied upon as backup to Kane over the course of a season as he’s had a patchy appearance record since 2010/11.

The nomadic centre-forward, who has played for Parma, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Villarreal, Fiorentina, Levante and Celta Vigo, has featured in just 87 top-flight games from a possible 266 in the last seven years, scoring 30 goals.

Tottenham can do much better than Rossi. Kane is expected to be out of action until March while Son could be away at the Asian Cup until early-February. Pochettino doesn’t have much trust in Fernando Llorente or Vincent Janssen, but it’s also unlikely they will panic buy just to fill a hole in the side for a matter of weeks.
