Opinion: Tottenham should sign £38k-per-week AS Monaco man, could cost £40m

|

Tottenham are expected to sign a central midfielder this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino failing to replace Mousa Dembele in January. The Lilywhites have Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama to provide the substance while Dele Alli and Harry Winks bring more creativity to the side.

Spurs need a player who can affect the game in both boxes and should consider returning for Youri Tielemans as a result. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Leicester and was a standout performer at the King Power Stadium. Tielemans made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes, scoring and creating eight goals.

He admitted to Sky Sports that he was flattered by Spurs’ interest, saying: “Yes (I am flattered by Tottenham’s interest). They are really big teams in England and in Europe. To hear those names gives me confidence. I just try to play my game on the pitch and try my best.”

The Belgian international racked up 1092 minutes of Premier League football, making 16 chances, boasting a 67% dribble success rate, averaging 49 passes-per-game with 85% accuracy and averaging a tackle or interception every 50 minutes.

The £38k-per-week midfielder has an asking price of £40m, but time will tell if Tottenham make a move. Pochettino missed out on Tielemans’ signature in January and may have competition from Manchester United for his services this summer. Nevertheless, he’d be a brilliant addition to the squad if they can capture him.
