Opinion: Tottenham should sign £160k-per-week Manchester United man as a temporary solution

|

Christian Eriksen has an uncertain future at Tottenham, with his contract having 12 months to run and no progress being made on an extension. Spurs may have to consider cashing in on the 27-year-old this summer as they could lose Eriksen for nothing in 2020.

Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to keep Eriksen, but the club look set to lose the Danish international as his contract continues to wind down without much hopes of talks restarting. Replacing the midfielder will be a difficult task if he leaves, but Juan Mata could be a decent temporary solution for next season.

The Manchester United playmaker is out of contract in the coming weeks and could be available on a free transfer. Tottenham were linked with the 31-year-old last summer and should consider returning for Mata on a short-term deal as somewhat of a replacement for Eriksen.

Like the Tottenham star, Mata is an attacking-midfielder who plays in between the lines and creates chances for his teammates. He’s not as explosive as Eriksen but would be a decent alternative for cheap. The Spanish international earns £8.32m-a-year/£160k-per-week at United and may be open to joining another top-four club if he does leave the Red Devils this summer.
