Opinion: Tottenham receive transfer boost in pursuit of 23-year-old, door open to a transfer

|

Tottenham have been linked with Joachim Andersen due to the uncertain future of Toby Alderweireld, but they risked missing out of the 23-year-old to AS Roma after a bid was lodged. According to Calciomercato, however, the Serie A giants have seen their bid rejected which opens the door to Tottenham to make an official approach.

Andersen has a £31.3m asking price, but Roma’s offer included two players which is why Sampdoria turned it down. Tottenham may not make a move for the centre-back until Toby Alderweireld’s future is resolved, but his £25m release clause will remain until two weeks before the end of the transfer window – July 25.

If Spurs continue to wait, they could lose out on the uncapped Dane. No bids came in for Alderweireld last summer and no bids have been made for the 30-year-old this summer either. It’s hard to see Andersen still being at Sampdoria in five weeks’ time, so Tottenham might have to make an early move in anticipation of Alderweireld leaving.

The Belgian international only has 12 months remaining on his deal and doesn’t appear likely to sign an extension so his exit is coming either this summer or next. He’ll need replacing regardless and Spurs now have a chance to move for a player they’ve long been linked with.
