Tottenham should sign Olivier Giroud in January

|

Although Tottenham have Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Carlos Vinicius who can lead the line, Jose Mourinho doesn’t consider Son as a conventional centre-forward and hasn’t given Vinicius much playing time this season.

Kane, while brilliant, has been prone to injury in recent years, so I think we should sign another striker when the winter transfer window opens. One player who may be available is Olivier Giroud who we’ve tried to sign in the past.

What would Giroud bring to the squad?

Goals and assists while being a direct replacement for Kane. The 34-year-old struggled at the beginning of his career, scoring only two goals in 25 games for Grenoble Foot 38 and making just one appearance on loan at FC Istres (2007-2008), but he’s been pretty consistent ever since.

Giroud scored 36 goals and made nine assists in 67 games for Tours FC (2008 – 2010), netted 39 goals and made 17 assists in 85 games for Montpellier (2010 – 2012), bagged 105 goals and made 41 assists in 253 games for Arsenal (2012-2018), and scored 30 goals and made 14 assists in 96 games for Chelsea (2018 – present).

He’s scored two goals in eight games across the board this campaign but contributed 11 goals in 25 games last season – one goal/assist every 128 minutes. In 2019/20, Giroud won 50/102 aerial duels, created eight chances and won nine free-kicks from 18 Premier League games. He’s a target man who can bring others into the attack, so we can play through him like we do Kane.

How much would he cost?

Although we failed to sign Giroud in January, we stand a good chance of landing his signature this time round. The 34-year-old wants out of Chelsea as he’s not happy with the lack of playing time. Calciomercato say we’ll have competition from Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami, West Ham United and Inter Milan, but I think we should try our hand.

With a Transfermarkt valuation of £4.5m and CIES Football Observatory valuation of €4m-€7m (£3.6m-£6.2m), Giroud won’t break the bank. He takes home £135k-per-week/£7m-a-year at Chelsea so he’d be among our highest earners, but I believe it’s worth the short-term gamble.

We wanted Giroud months ago, so why not try again?
