Opinion: Tottenham may have to pay £17m and £1m wages to sign midfielder

|

Tottenham are expected to shop for a new central midfielder this summer with Mauricio Pochettino on the hunt for a replacement for Mousa Dembele. Victor Camarasa has been on the radar of the Lilywhites after impressing during his loan spell at Cardiff City. He’s rejected the opportunity to turn his deal permanent with the Welsh outfit which could open the door to Spurs.

The 24-year-old has made 33 appearances in all competitions for City, scoring and creating nine goals. He’s racked up 2579 minutes of playing time, averaged 28 passes-per-game with 75% accuracy, created 50 chances, has whipped in 121 crosses with 34% accuracy, won 20 aerial duels (39%), made 34 successful dribbles (55%), 25 clearances and has averaged a tackle (28) or interception (33) every 42 minutes.

Camarasa has a £17m asking price and earned £0.84m-a-year/£16k-per-week at Cardiff. Given Tottenham’s lowest earner in the first-team is Kyle Walker-Peters on £1.04m-a-year/£20k-per-week, Camarasa’s wages would likely match or surpass the Englishman’s if he’s going to be a first-team player in 2019/20.

Tottenham won’t break the bank to sign the former Spanish u21 international, and he’s proven his worth in the Premier League, so time will tell if they do make a move.
