Opinion: Tottenham have ready made replacement should ace depart

|

This summer has already been a busier one for Tottenham than last year, and it’s set to get busier. One player whose future is still undecided is Toby Alderweireld. Whilst Sky Sports report that he believes he’ll stay at Tottenham, anything can happen and should he leave he’ll need replacing.

That’s where we come in with something of a hot take. The Lilywhites may have come to adore Toby Alderweireld for his defensive solidity and form over the last four years since his summer 2015 move to North London, but if he leaves, the club should replace him from within.

Mauricio Pochettino has the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, but the club also have young central defenders like TJ Eyoma and Japhet Tanganga, the latter of which put in a stellar performance against Juventus in his 45-minute display yesterday.

With the young players that the Lilywhites have on their books impressing in pre-season and obviously convincing Mauricio Pochettino of their credentials, there really is no reason why the Lilywhites should have to fork out to replace Alderweireld if he leaves, this summer or next.

The likelihood is that the Belgian will be a Tottenham player when the transfer window slams shut, but next summer his deal expires and the Lilywhites could be forced to lose him for free. That’s when Pochettino can call upon one of his young guns.

Foyth and Sanchez will have an extra 12 months of experience under their belts and Vertonghen is as solid as ever, so it would provide the Lilywhites with an option to bring forward another homegrown ace who could star for them.

For now, though, the Lilywhites have three more pre-season friendlies against Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan, giving the club’s young players more time to show what they can do this summer, with Tanganga one who will be dying for more minutes.
