Opinion: Tottenham forward demonstrates his importance with latest display

|

Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday were rampant as they tore into poor old Crystal Palace and made them look rather ordinary.

The ball was moved quickly and directly by Spurs as they raced off into a four-goal lead before the break in a stunning display of attacking football.

This was very different to Tottenham’s last home game where Spurs had fallen to an insipid 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

The key man on Saturday, though, was not Harry Kane or Christian Eriksen but Heung-min Son the 27-year-old who loves scoring against Crystal Palace.

This was his fifth goal against the Eagles, all scored in home fixtures, but Son not only scored a brace he was the creative force that all of Spurs’ moves went through.

The 27-year-old was in scintillating form on Saturday, and even though he was banned for the first two games of the season he looks fired up for this year, and this match showed his importance to the team.

Playing him alongside Kane in a diamond 4-4-2 could prove to be inspired by Mauricio Pochettino as it allows him to float into space and to drift wherever he wants.

This is what he did on Saturday, and he caused havoc all afternoon.

Son was heavily involved in Tottenham’s second goal as he dropped deep to pick up the ball and picked out Serge Aurier who lashed a ball across the box that Patrick Van Aanholt prodded into his own net.

The goal came from Son dropping deep to find space in between Palace’s midfield and defence, and from there he exploited the gaps.

Last season, when played up front Son, scored nine goals and provided five assists – then when Kane returned, he was stuck onto the left-wing and only contributed three goals and one assist.

If Pochettino can continue playing Son alongside Kane, then he could have one of the Premier League’s deadliest strike partnerships.

Certainly, performances like Saturday prove just how valuable Son is to Tottenham.
