Tottenham interested in Eduardo Camavinga, but who is he?

|

According to Football.London, Tottenham could make a move for Eduardo Camavinga next year and L’Equipe (h/t Squawka) said in 2019 that we may have to battle Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid for his signature.

We reportedly had a bid for Camavinga rejected by Stade Rennais last summer and may have to put up a lot more money to bring him to North London in 2021. The highly-rated 17-year-old is a regular at club level, has already represented France at senior level and has a market value bigger than all but three of our players.

Who is Camavinga?

Camavinga has made 51 appearances in all competitions for Rennes since rising through the youth ranks to the first-team in 2019, scoring two goals with three assists.

In 39 Ligue 1 appearances, the teenage midfielder has created 15 chances, completed 87.5% of his 1418 passes, won 40/80 aerial duels (50%), made 33/50 successful dribbles (66%), had 22 shots with seven hitting the target (31.8%), blocked 54 passes/crosses/shots, made 38 clearances, won 81 free-kicks and averaged a tackle (147) or interception (44) every 15 minutes.

Camavinga made his Rennes debut at the age of 16, made his France debut at the age of 17 and could be on the move to a European giant by the time when he turns 18, so the future looks bright.

How much will he cost?

Camavinga’s market value with Transfermarkt is £45m and CIES Football Observatory say he’s worth €40m-€50m (£36.1m-£45.1m), but Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sportsmole) said in June that the Frenchman’s asking price is around €60m (£54.2m).

Daniel Levy has curbed spending due to financial woes from the Covid-19 pandemic, so it’s hard to see us putting enough money up to sign Camavinga. The 17-year-old is a talented midfielder who would improve our squad, but the interest from other clubs might also be a problem.

Summary

If we can generate transfer funds by selling deadwood in the next two transfer windows, there’s a chance we could lure Camavinga to Tottenham in 2021. I think he’ll end up elsewhere, however, as other suitors can blow us out of the water financially.

It’s a shame.
