Tottenham should NOT sign Demarai Gray this summer

|

According to The Athletic, Tottenham are still interested in Demarai Gray but have yet to make a concrete offer to Leicester City.

The 24-year-old has an uncertain future at the King Power Stadium as he’s struggled for form and playing time under Brendan Rodgers and wants first-team football elsewhere.

Spurs shouldn’t be the one to offer Gray an escape route, however, as he wouldn’t improve our squad.

Why is Gray leaving Leicester?

The 24-year-old joined Leicester from Birmingham City in 2016 and has gone on to make 168 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals with 17 assists. Gray no longer commands a starting place, however, and hasn’t been prolific in front of goal, so Leicester don’t really need him.

Last season, he started only eight games across the board and amassed just 607 minutes of Premier League football. Gray failed to play a full 90 minutes in any league game and spent the majority of his time on the bench or out of the matchday squad entirely.

He currently finds himself behind Harvey Barnes, Marc Albrighton and Ayoze Perez in the pecking order.  Cengiz Under recently joined from AS Roma and could overtake the 24-year-old too.

Gray has been left out of the squad for both of Leicester’s league outings and is in the last year of his deal at the King Power, so a move away would suit all parties. City won’t want to lose him for free in 2021, however, so they need to cash in while he still has value.

Unfortunately for them, The Athletic say there isn’t a lot of interest.

Would he be a good signing for Tottenham?

No. If Gray can’t get in the Leicester team, how would he play for us? We have Gareth Bale, Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn, Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son at our disposal, so we don’t need another wide-man. Gray has only scored 10 Premier League goals and made 11 assists in the last four seasons, so he isn’t better than what we already have.

Summary

Gray won’t join us this summer. It makes no sense for Tottenham to be interested given how much depth we have on the wing, so I can’t see this going anywhere.
