Opinion: Tottenham could sign £55k-per-week Leicester man despite recent comments

|

Tottenham have been linked with James Maddison, but his £60m asking price may have been a stumbling block in potential negotiations. He’s also made some comments surrounding his future at the King Power Stadium that may act as a ‘no thankyou’ to suitors.

When asked if he was thinking about a move, the £55k-per-week midfielder told Sky Sports: “No. You have just got to ignore that and take it all in your stride. As a 17-year-old boy, I’d started five games for Coventry and saw on my phone that I was being linked with Tottenham and Liverpool.

“With transfer talk you need to take it as a compliment that people are even talking about you, it won’t distract me.” While Leicester fans will be happy to hear he’s not thinking about leaving, Maddison’s recent comments don’t exactly ring true when looking at his career – from Coventry City (League One), to Norwich City (Championship) and now Leicester City (Premier League).

The 22-year-old spent two years at Coventry before joining Norwich and spent two years with the Canaries before joining Leicester. Maddison’s ambition led to him making the step-up from League One to the Premier League, so why would he suddenly stop now?

The midfielder may play down talk of leaving in the media when there’s been no official approach from a top-six club, but whether he’d turn down a contract offer remains to be seen. Maddison is on the cusp of a senior England call-up and joining a side like Spurs would tip him over the edge.

Should sides test the water this summer, time will tell if Maddison commits his future to Leicester.
