Opinion: Tottenham could have a title-winning midfield pairing with this signing

|

This summer has been massive for Tottenham so far and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. The Lilywhites looked set to lose Christian Eriksen a while back and bring in Giovani Lo Celso as his replacement, Football.London, but now it looks like the Lilywhites could enjoy the two as a pair.

The Argentine Real Betis man has been one of those who Tottenham have been looking at for a long time this summer, and they had a bid of £53m rejected back in late May for the player (BBC), yet now it seems they’re set to eventually get their man, and it won’t be at the expense of Christian Eriksen.

Between them, last season saw Eriksen and Lo Celso chip in with an almighty 49 combined goals and assists, with Eriksen scoring ten and assisting 17 in 51 games (Transfermarkt) whilst Lo Celso scored 16 and assisted six in 46 (Transfermarkt).

The pair look like a match made in heaven. Should Mauricio Pochettino deploy them together with Tanguy Ndombele in a deeper role in midfield then the two of them would be lethal, adding goals and assists from midfield in the way that title-winning sides do.

We all know what Eriksen can do, scoring and assisting from midfield, but in Lo Celso the Lilywhites would be signing a player who made a habit of popping up with big goals last season, scoring in a 4-3 win at the Nou Camp, grabbing both in a 2-1 win against Villarreal and notching the winner against AC Milan in the Europa League.

If the two can hit the ground running and work together well on the pitch, then the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son will be licking their lips. The supply from the two creators would be superb and considering they’ve both shown that they can find the net too, it won’t be an easy ride for the Lilywhites’ Premier League competition this season.
