Opinion: The sad reason why Danny Rose could stay at Tottenham

|

Danny Rose was tipped to leave Tottenham after speaking out about his wages in 2017, months after he signed a new deal, but the left-back has stayed at with the Lilywhites ever since.

Rose continues to be linked with a move away from Spurs, but no club has met his reported asking price, nor have Tottenham sought to sell him. The 28-year-old doesn’t appear to want to leave either anymore and this may be why…

He appears to be emotionally drained. The English international spoke to the Guardian about suffering with depression after a series of family tragedies and injury woes, leading to his playing career taking a back seat.

Rose’s latest comments highlight that he’s just going through the motions, saying: “I’ve got five or six more years left in football, and I just can’t wait to see the back of it.” Is he still driven for success? Or is he happy to play out the rest of his career in a familiar setting?

The defender has two years remaining on his deal with Tottenham, taking him up until the age of 31, but it’s been nearly three years since he last signed an extension. Rose is surely next in line for a new contract and appears to be on the same page as Mauricio Pochettino.

His next deal could be the last of his career and there doesn’t appear to be an obvious destination in England if he left, likely to due his advancing age and lofty askinbg price of £50m – lack of resale value.

Rose is a first-team regular for Spurs and the Three Lions and may be content for that to continue for the remainder of his career. This summer will give the biggest indication of his intentions, but it does appear he’ll stay even if he’s not entirely happy.
