Opinion: Supporters may be underwhelmed with Tottenham’s next potential signing

|

Tottenham have been on the hunt for a centre-forward to replace Fernando Llorente this summer, but they haven’t been making much progress. Eyebrows were raised when Llorente was quietly released at the end of the season, but he could be on his way back according to the Daily Mail.

Mauricio Pochettino needs a player who won’t break the bank, is happy being behind Harry Kane in the pecking order and can affect a game from the bench, so it’s easy to see why they’re considering re-signing Llorente. Supporters may be underwhelmed, however, as he’s likely to be the only striker brought in.

The 34-year-old made 66 appearances in all competitions for Spurs between 2017 and 2019, scoring and creating 19 goals. He’s only netted twice in the Premier League since his move from Swansea City but proved to be an important player in Europe.

Llorente played in every Champions League game for Spurs after the last-16 and fired Tottenham into the Champions League semi-finals with a late goal against Manchester City.

It’s not hard to see why Tottenham would want to retain him for another year, but questions should be asked why he was allowed to leave in the first place and why he’s the only forward being approached this summer.

If Spurs go into next season with the same strikeforce as 2018/19, fans may be disappointed.
