Opinion: Spurs could pay £18m & £3.6m wage for centre-mid, player dreams of Champions League

Tottenham need a central midfielder to replace Mousa Dembele and potentially Victor Wanyama this summer, but Mauricio Pochettino won’t have lucrative funds to risk on a player who could flop in the Premier League. Signing somebody who has already impressed in England is a shrewd move, so why don’t Spurs make an approach for Everton’s Idrissa Gueye?

The Londoners’ new stadium has slowed down their recruitment, but they are expected to strengthen in the coming months. Gueye would provide value for money as he continues to lead the Premier League charts for tackles and is in the top-10 for interceptions. The 29-year-old reportedly wants Champions League football so he could be lured away from Everton this summer.

Gueye’s market value is £18m and he currently earns £3.6m-a-year/£70k-per-week at Goodison Park. The midfielder has three years left on his deal, so Tottenham could end up paying close to £30m for Gueye’s services until 2022. The Senegalese international has made 101 appearances in all competitions for Everton since joining the Merseysiders from Aston Villa in 2016.

He’s adept at turning over possession and is comfortable on the ball. Gueye would be an upgrade on Wanyama. If Spurs do sell the midfielder and some reports suggest, his money could go towards signing the 29-year-old.
