Opinion: Spurs cannot afford a repeat of the Gareth Bale saga over £150m man

Tottenham Hotspur might be getting a sense of déjà vu, as they are facing the prospect of losing star striker Harry Kane this summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, according to reports.

The north London side have been in poor form recently have lost their last three games in a row in all competitions, and are also on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League after their 1-0 first-leg defeat against RB Leipzig at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

To add to the pressure, the Telegraph revealed that concerns are keeping in the club’s ability to keep hold of their club captain and they are “dreading” the news. The report also states that if Kane wanted to leave Tottenham, the club would ask for around £150m for the England international

Will Harry Kane leave Tottenham this summer?

Yes

No

With Jose Mourinho coming in to replace former boss Mauricio Pochettino before Christmas, they have slipped to seventh place in the Premier League table, five points behind Chelsea who sit in fourth. Any sale of the Portuguese tactician’s best players would be a serious blow in terms of building the squad.

One imagines there would be plenty of clubs that would be interested in Kane’s services. If he does leave, they mustn’t fall into the same trap as they did when Gareth Bale was sold. The scatter-gun transfer policy used to sign multiple players was a bad move and put Spurs back several years in terms of their progression up the Premier League table.

The Welshman was sold to Real Madrid in 2013 for £85.3m and the north London side went crazy with their spending, bringing in the likes of Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Etienne Capoue (as per TransferMarkt), splashing out £110m on anyone they could get their hands on.

This puts huge pressure on Mourinho. Not only are they behind in the race for the top four, but now there is a possibility that he could lose some of his best players. If they fail to qualify for the Champions League, Mourinho’s press conferences are expected to be interesting, as they were in 2018.
