Opinion: Pochettino would be stupid to stand in the way of £31.5m-rated ace’s Tottenham exit

After the 2018 World Cup the feeling amongst Tottenham fans was that Kieran Trippier would shine for them in the 2018/19 season. The defender had put in an almighty shift in Russia, yet the player that took to the pitch in England was not the same one, and now Mauricio Pochettino would do well to sell him.

Despite a season of mediocrity and mistakes from Tripper, that include a missed penalty against Crystal Palace, an own-goal against Chelsea and a calamitous pass that let Manchester United score on the break at Wembley, there is still interest in the defender from Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich.

That is via Sky Sports, who also speak of Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Napoli as potential destinations for the 28-year-old. The main club interested, though, appears to be Bayern, who are looking at a right-back to deputise for Joshua Kimmich, the Bavarian giants’ first choice right-sided defender.

The report does claim that for Bayern, Trippier may be out of reach as he’s ‘too expensive to spend most of his time on the bench’ and if that’s the case then Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy will have to come to some sort of agreement, as offloading Trippier should be one of their summer priorities.

Trippier, who’s valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, has performed well for the most part of his Spurs’ career up until last season, but after his horror show for the club over the last 12 months, getting him offloaded and bringing in a new right-back should be a priority.

Poch and Levy have already shown that they’re not afraid to splash the cash this summer, splurging a fee of £53.8m, that could rise to £62.8m, on Tanguy Ndombele (BBC), and allowing Trippier to leave could see them move for Japanese international Hiroki Sakai, who was linked by Sky Sports back in June, or Youcef Atal, who The Telegraph linked the club with in May.

Whoever comes in to replace Trippier isn’t relevant at the moment, though, as all that the fans will be concerned with is getting the defender off their wage bill and away from their starting eleven. The Daily Mail recently claimed he was one of eight players put on the transfer list by the club, and allowing him to move to Bayern this summer looks like it would solve plenty of problems.
