Opinion: Pochettino should sign 26-year-old to strengthen Tottenham’s attack, pundit agrees

|

Owen Hargreaves believes Tottenham should sign Wilfried Zaha as he could improve their attack. The Crystal Palace winger has been linked with a move to Spurs for some time and was the subject of bids from the Lilywhites in August 2016.

Palace refused to sell Zaha at the time as they believed he was worth more than the £12m Tottenham were willing to spend. Considering how much the 26-year-old has impressed in recent years, it appears Palace were right. Nevertheless, Hargreaves hopes Tottenham will return for the Ivorian.

He said on BT Sport (h/t Goal): “Maybe the only way they are going to get better is with a genuine world-class player. (Pochettino) only wants a player of high character. I think he wants people to fit in and not upset the balance. I would like to see Zaha at Tottenham.”

Zaha has contributed seven goals in 22 Premier League games this season, making 71 successful dribbles and creating 36 chances. After Tottenham’s £12m bid was turned down in 2016, Zaha went on to score and create 16 league goals in 2016/17 and 12 goals in 2017/18 – a total of 35 goals scored or created in 86 league games.

Mauricio Pochettino isn’t short on attacking options, with Eric Lamela, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Christian Eriksen at his disposal, but Zaha could be a good addition to the side. He’s a homegrown player, having risen from the Palace academy to their first-team in 2010, and may be open to a new challenge.

With the Eagles looking set to consolidate in the bottom-half of the Premier League, could the lure of European football and the hunt for major honours see Zaha consider a move to Tottenham? Should the club pursue his signature at the end of the season?
