Opinion: Pochettino should look towards unlikely hero to solve right-back trouble

|

Tottenham fans are all well aware of the gaps in their squad this summer. The Liliywhites’ biggest problem area is probably at full-back, seeing as Kieran Trippier has been sold whilst Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier and Ben Davies are all injured.

That leaves the club with just Danny Rose and Kyle Walker-Peters who are fit and ready to go into the season. There are talks that at left-back we may see Ryan Sessegnon come in, but on the opposite side at right-back, the problem is very real.

One man who could be set to step up and fill in at right-back, though, is one who not many Tottenham fans would have contemplated being used in the role and one that Football.London have also touted as a potential starter in the role.

The man in question is Moussa Sissoko and it actually makes a lot of sense for the Frenchman to be deployed out there. The midfield man is certainly faster and stronger than the likes of Aurier, Walker-Peters and Foyth, and his ability to carry the ball forward is second to none at Spurs.

It would also solve a selection problem that could arise at Tottenham too. With Tanguy Ndombele signing from Lyon, it looks like the new man will be set to partner with either Sissoko or Harry Winks in a double pivot. If that’s the case, Poch can play all three with Sissoko at right-back.

That way, he’d have the metronome that is Winks as well as the all-action Ndonbele, with Sissoko and his dynamic ability to carry the ball forward coming from right-back as opposed to central midfield. It would obviously take some getting used to, but Pochettino loves re-training his players.

We’ve seen Eric Dier transition from a right-back to a centre-back to a defensive midfielder under Pochettino, as well as Lucas Moura show his skill set as both a winger and a centre-forward, so it’s not completely out of the equation for Sissoko to make the right-back spot his own.
