The Independent have claimed Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make an offer worth around £20million for Leeds United’s Jack Clarke.

The teenager has been outstanding this season for the Championship outfit, perhaps, making it no real surprise that a host of clubs have become interested in him.

He clearly has plenty of talent and it would be wrong to suggest that he does not have what it takes to be a hit in the Premier League in the future. Clarke fits the mould of players Tottenham would love to have at the club and is a player Mauricio Pochettino would surely love to have on the training field day in and day out.

However, that is the problem. We do not necessarily need someone for the future at the moment; we need someone who can come into the team and do a job for us straight away.

Spurs should be looking at bringing in players this summer who can help to take us up another level and finally help to end our wait for a trophy – a player that has already developed into a quality and established individual and one that can provide a top-drawer performance on a regular and consistent basis would be ideal.

Despite the defeat in the Champions League final, we will still be a hugely attractive club for big-name players to join and those are the men that we should be looking to attract.

A winger is certainly the right position to try and strengthen with Erik Lamela and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou unlikely to have an impact next season, however, Clarke surely is not the answer.

  • Actually we need both. We were running out of players this season so we need reinforcements, players who can go straight into the mix. However that doesn’t actually make us any better, just more resilient. To get better we need players better than we already have and its hard enough finding players as good as we already have at prices we can afford. Buying players who will “take us up another level ” is a delusion. Since you don’t tell us who they are you may already know that. So the only way to improve in the longer term is to develop our own.

  • Jod, I am a Leeds fan and what you say could quite easily come from me and in reference to Leeds United. I hope you don’t take this as being disrespectful but one of our issues last season was not making our team more resilient. We had opportunities to add some steel in January and failed to do so, at the final hurdle we fell and couldn’t recover. The players in the team are excellent and to improve on them, as you say, takes money that we don’t appear to have. I for one would not like to see the back of Clarke because he is a quality baller; however, if he has to go, or wants to go, Spurs would be my choice without a shadow of a doubt. My two hopes for next season are that we get promoted as champions and you get the PL, and Champions League titles. MOT ALAW
