Opinion: One key area must be addressed when Tottenham reach January

This summer has undoubtedly been a good one for Tottenham. The club have strengthened at left-back and in midfield, but one key area, if anything, has been made weaker by the club’s summer of spending and when January comes around it will be up to the club to strengthen.

That area, of course, is at right-back. If it wasn’t bad enough that the club have sold Kieran Trippier without signing a replacement, one of the key men expected to step into the role for the season is now out with an injury, as Juan Foyth has an ankle problem that he suffered during the Audi Cup.

That leaves just Serge Aurier, who is also a fitness concern, and Kyle Walker-Peters. Those two are both talented footballers in their own right, but Aurier is far too rash and Walker-Peters has question marks over whether or not he’s physical enough for a 38-game Premier League season.

Towards the end of the transfer window, Tottenham were linked to a few options at right-back, although none of them came to fruition. The likes of Youcef Atal and Elseid Hysaj were the main two, but neither of them signed and now the Lilywhites have at least four months of getting by until the next transfer window.

The chances are that Mauricio Pochettino will make something work, and Football.London even claimed that Moussa Sissoko could be set to have his game reformed and become a right-back. It’s not the worst idea in the world, but it’s not as good as actually going out and just buying a right-back in January.

Whatever happens, Pochettino and Daniel Levy will make sure that things run smoothly, and whilst the majority of Tottenham fans want to see their defence improved upon, it will ultimately be up to the pair to see where money needs to be spent in future windows.
