Opinion: Offering Christian Eriksen bumper wage increase isn’t the solution to retain him

|

It is no secret that Christian Eriksen is looking to move on from Tottenham.

The Danish international admitted just four days after Spurs’ Champions League final loss to Liverpool to the Telegraph that he is eager for a new challenge in the game, but as we all know, a move away from Tottenham is yet to materialise.

Despite reports from BBC Sport claiming that Manchester United were in talks with Eriksen, the Dane feature the opening game of the Premier League season for Spurs, and now the Daily Mail report that the north London side are set to offer the 27-year-old playmaker a bumper contract worth £200,000-a-week to keep him at Tottenham.

Of course, a wage increase of nearly double of what you currently earn seems like a logical way to keep a player at a club, but Eriksen’s reasoning for wanting to leave Spurs seemingly appears not to be financially motivated, but one based on success and silverware, something he is yet to experience in England.

Although Tottenham have made incredible progress under Mauricio Pochettino in the previous seasons with the club consecutively finishing in the Premier League top-four and reaching a Champions League final, trophies are yet to come since the Argentine’s arrival, and for Eriksen, his desire to win trophies is evident in his previous comments.

The Danish playmaker has expressed to the likes of the Daily Star and the Independent that he wants to win silverware during his time at Spurs, but after defeat in a Champions League final as well as losing in the likes of the FA Cup semi-final and League Cup semi-final in previous years, Eriksen’s comments about his willingness to leave the club is a sign that he wants to win silverware in his career, something he might never achieve with Pochettino.

Eriksen has been an outstanding servant for Spurs ever since joining in the great spending spree of 2013, but after six years at the club, zero trophies and some of Europe’s biggest sides eyeing him up, the Danish international is ready to move on from Tottenham despite the money being offered for him to stay.
