Opinion: New signing gives key Tottenham man a licence to play his best football

|

Tottenham fans will be loving their club’s deadline day exploits, but the signing of Ryan Sessegnon and Giovani Lo Celso allows the club to make a lot of changes that aren’t too obvious on the face of things. For one, it gives Mauricio Pochettino more scope to use his diamond formation.

That diamond was prevalent during pre-season and worked very well as the Lilywhites beat Juventus and won the Audi Cup. However, it also gives the club the ability to use two-up front, which is where Ryan Sessegnon freeing up Heung-Min Son comes in.

With Pochettino likely flicking between the 4-2-3-1 and the 4-4-2 diamond, Sessegnon will likely switch between being an attacking left-sided midfielder and a left-back. In a 4-2-3-1 that gives Son scope to play as a centre-forward, and in the diamond it allows Son to partner Harry Kane as a two upfront.

Whilst we won’t see this for the first two games of the season seeing as Son is out of those with suspension after his red card against Bournemouth at the back end of last year, the potential for positional fluidity is a very exciting aspect of the 2019/20 season at Tottenham.

Sessegnon’s ability to feature on the left of the three in a 4-2-3-1 frees up Son to play the striker role that he did midway through last season when Harry Kane was injured, and it also prevents an overload at left-back, seeing as the Lilywhites now have Sessegnon, Danny Rose and Ben Davies.

Whatever happens, Sessegnon promises to be a very interesting player in North London, and with his ability to play anywhere down the left-hand side of the pitch, he’ll make for a very useful player as Pochettino tweaks and changes his system, likely using the teenager in a number of areas.
