Opinion: Mauricio Pochettino should sell £30k-per-week Tottenham man this summer

|

Josh Onomah could be on his way out of Tottenham this summer after struggling for playing time under Mauricio Pochettino. The £30k-per-week midfielder has spent the last two seasons on loan to sides in the Championship – Aston Villa (August 4, 2017 – May 31, 2018) and Sheffield Wednesday (August 31, 2018 – May 31, 2019) – and finds himself low down the pecking order at Spurs.

Since rising through the youth ranks to the Tottenham first-team in 2015, the 22-year-old has made 32 appearances in all competitions. Onomah’s last outing for the Lilywhites came against Watford on April 8, 2017 and it’s unlikely he will make another given how much competition he has for a starting place.

Onomah can play on the left and right side of midfield but is a natural in a central role. He’s behind Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier at central midfield and behind Dele Alli & Christian Eriksen in attacking-midfield. Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son are preferred in the wide roles.

The England u21 international has two years left on his deal at Tottenham, but Pochettino may as well cash in on the midfielder if he has no future at the club. Oliver Skipp looks more likely to make the breakthrough, so Onomah will have too many players to edge out to stand a chance of featuring again.
