Opinion: Latest update on future of Tottenham target is good news for Pochettino

|

Tottenham fans have long wondered if Gareth Bale would ever make his way back to North London to don the Lilywhite shirt, and it looks like this summer could finally see it happen. Marca recently reported of Tottenham’s interest in the Welshman, and now they’ve been given a huge boost to any potential deal.

Real Madrid fell 3-1 to Bayern Munich last night in a pre-season clash, and speaking at the game, Zinedine Zidane had some choice words on Bale’s future. The Frenchman claimed that Bale is surplus to requirements as he was left out of the squad that fell to Bayern, claiming that the player ‘is very close to leaving’, comments via Goal.com.

Whilst we don’t know who Bale is leaving for, the Welshman’s transfer is sure to send shockwaves throughout Europe. When a player of his calibre ups and moves clubs the fees are always astronomical, and what a statement signing it would be should he make a sensational return to N17.

Tottenham fans wouldn’t be against it if they could get a decent deal for the player, but wages have always been the issue surrounding the talented versatile winger. With a player like Bale, the money tends to be worth it though, as in his career in Madrid he’s bagged an amazing 167 combined goals and assists in 231 games, Transfermarkt.

With the attacking force that Mauricio Pochettino has at his disposal already including Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura, Bale isn’t a necessity, but the Welshman’s return would have a perfect mix of nostalgia and a statement of intent, as it would show Spurs are ready to kick on to the next level.

Back in June, the fans suffered possibly the most painful defeat in their history as they fell to Liverpool in the Champions League final, but with a player like Bale, a moment of magic in big games is always possible, as we all saw so many times back in his first spell playing for the club.

Bale’s highlight reel from his Tottenham days is a lengthy one. Fantastic strikes against West Ham, Sunderland, Stoke, Inter Milan, Lyon, West Brom and Manchester City jump to mind, and with a potential return, he would surely only add to that list.
