Opinion: Latest transfer rumour is one that could be devastating for Tottenham fans

|

When Jose Mourinho got the Tottenham Hotspur job, a lot was made of what would happen when the January and summer transfer windows come around. However, if these links anything to go by then it will be a rough time for the north London club.

The links in question have come ahead of the January window, and the Belgian outlet Les Sport+ have claimed that Marouane Fellaini could soon be set to make his way from China back to the Premier League, and this does not bode well for the Lilywhites at all.

The report from the Belgian outlet states:

‘Fellaini was contacted by José Mourinho himself. The Portuguese coach would like to repatriate our compatriot in the Premier League and would have made it his priority for his first winter transfer window at the Spurs considering that it does not have, within its workforce, a profile similar to that of Fellaini.’

This is certainly something that the Lilywhites will not want to see, and it’s not hard to see why. The argument for Fellaini coming to Spurs is that he would play a similar role to what Fernando Llorente did last season, but it’s more complicated than that.

Fellaini, during his time with Manchester United, was on wages of £100,000 per week (Spotrac), and that is not the kind of money that Daniel Levy usually shells out on squad player’s wages. It also doesn’t help that Tottenham fans all know where money needs to be invested, and it’s not into a battering ram.

Bringing in full-backs and defensive reinforcements is going to be key for the Lilywhites. Things need refreshing at the back and whilst the change of system, methods and faces that Mourinho and his new coaching staff coming in will have created will help, signing players will be much more effective.

Will Mourinho fix the defence?

Yes

No

If Mourinho has some grand idea and wants to turn Fellaini into a new brand of right-back then, by all means, we’re happy to be proven wrong, but this just doesn’t add up and we’ll be more than happy to see this rumour disappear as quickly as it surfaced.
