Opinion: Latest signing makes very little sense at Tottenham

|

Tottenham supporters are keen to get out of their current rut, and it looks like Mauricio Pochettino is absolutely desperate to make sure he’s the man to do so, although the latest move that the Lilywhites have made is such a strange one.

That move, as you all will have seen, was to bring Michel Vorm back into the fold at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after he was initially released over the summer at the end of his contract after five years as a Lilywhite, and it truly is a strange signing.

We understand that this is certainly a precautionary move seeing as Hugo Lloris is out injured and is not going to be playing any more football in 2019. Paulo Gazzaniga is going to be the club’s number one for the time being, which means Vorm is most likely going to be on the bench.

However, the issue with that is that it blocks the path to the first team for both Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman, two promising young goalkeepers who would have had a great chance of making their debuts had it not been for the return of the 35-year-old Dutch shot-stopper.

Last season we saw quite a lot of Vorm, and in truth, it was no surprise when Gazzaniga usurped him as the club’s back-up shot-stopper, so the fact that Pochettino has brought him back is extremely strange especially when you factor in how heavily Poch has relied on young players in the past.

Whether or not Vorm is set to feature this season or not is completely down to Gazzaniga and if he can stay fit for long enough to see Lloris return, although there is a lot of football to be played still in 2019, so anything can happen, and we still might yet see Vorm make his second debut as a Tottenham player.
