Opinion: Latest report is a strange move by Mauricio Pochettino, supporters won’t be happy

|

According to Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard, Mauricio Pochettino isn’t planning on signing a replacement for Kieran Trippier. The Tottenham manager is reportedly content being left with Serge Aurier, Juan Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters at right-back, despite the trio spending much of 2018/19 on the periphery.

Aurier amassed 563 minutes of Premier League football last season, Walker-Peters racked up 374 and Foyth had 888. Pochettino clearly didn’t trust any one of the trio at right-back despite Trippier’s poor form throughout the campaign, so his decision not to sign a replacement is a strange move.

It’s not a surprise that Pochettino is considering internal options, as Tottenham haven’t made any progress with potential targets. Max Aarons is still at Norwich, Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined Manchester United and it’s unlikely that Dani Alves would come to Spurs. This decision may anger supporters, however.

Few would argue that Trippier was at his best last season, but they wouldn’t advocate selling their first-choice right-back without having a replacement in mind. Fans aren’t convinced Aurier, Walker-Peters and Foyth are good enough options in Trippier’s stead, so this latest move won’t be a popular decision.
