Opinion: Key Tottenham player has uncertain future, Pochettino has made zero progress

|

Christian Eriksen has an uncertain future at Tottenham as his deal continues to wind down, with transfer expert Ian McGarry revealing on The Transfer Window Podcast that he’s turned down three contract extensions. With 258 appearances since joining from Ajax in 2013, Eriksen has become an important player at Tottenham.

The 26-year-old has 18 months remaining on his deal with the Londoners but doesn’t look close to putting pen to paper on an extension. Mauricio Pochettino even revealed to Football.London on Friday that there has been: “No news (on Eriksen extending his deal). Everything is in the same place as months ago”.

Eriksen has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time, but a deal with Los Blancos looks unlikely as their No.1 target appears to be Chelsea’s Eden Hazard – they wouldn’t have enough money to sign both players in the summer transfer window. Eriksen would be in the final year of his deal at Tottenham next season, but Daniel Levy wouldn’t let him go for cheap.

The lack of progress made with his contract extension is a worry, however. Spurs have tied down Pochettino, Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son, Kieran Trippier, Erik Lamela, Davinson Sanchez and Harry Winks to new long-term deals in the last 12 months, but Eriksen isn’t budging. Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and the aforementioned Dane will be out of contract in 2020.
