Opinion: Jose Mourinho has a massive problem at Tottenham that needs addressing now

|

Jose Mourinho has given Tottenham fans something different to think about. Against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Lilywhites played a whopping 61 long balls (WhoScored) as they fell to a 2-1 defeat, and as they struggled going forward for the first time under Jose, at the back nothing changed.

Four games into this new Jose Mourinho era and the Lilywhites are yet to finish a game without conceding two goals. The Lilywhites have not been going well whatsoever at the back, and whilst when they get this new tactical lineup playing well, as they did against West Ham, Bournemouth and Olympiacos, they score goals, defensively they’ve been shambolic.

Positionally, the Lilywhites were atrocious. There are serious question marks over whether or not Jan Vertonghen can thrive in the left-back-cum-left-centre-back role, and with Serge Aurier seemingly unsure of where to be he often left Moussa Sissoko stranded.

With that in mind, the midfield struggled because of the defence. Sissoko getting pulled across left Harry Winks on his own in the middle and as good as the English international is, he cannot be expected to hold off wave after wave of the Red Devil’s attacks alone.

The problems were there from the off, and whilst Mourinho is still in the early days of his tenure and has a lot of work to do on his own backline, these issues are massive and they need to be sorted out urgently, especially when you look at the fixture list.

Will Mourinho fix the defence?

Yes

No

After the home clash with Burnley this weekend the Lilywhites travel to face Bayern Munich and Wolves before returning home to face Chelsea, and these are sides that can score a lot of goals when they’re at their best, which will be worrying for the shaky Spurs defence.
