Opinion: It’s time for Tottenham man to be moved on after years of stagnation

|

Some of the most recent news coming out of north London has been regarding a potential sale of one Tottenham man, and whilst the Lilywhites have hardly come to rely upon Eric Dier as of late, the holding midfield man is being linked with a move away from the club.

Dier has reportedly rejected a new contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he fears for his game time and is worried that he won’t be apart of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020, and as the fears over his future grow he could be set to look for a new club.

That news has come from The Daily Mail, and seeing as the 26-year-old has been at the club for a whopping six years this summer, it certainly looks like moving him on now could be the right move, especially considering his dwindling game time.

Across the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons, Dier missed a combined three games across the two 38 game seasons, playing 3,268 and 3,044 minutes respectively. However, last season Dier missed 18 of the 38 Premier League games and played a much reduced 1,509 minutes (Transfermarkt).

It must also be mentioned that Dier is now just one of a number of players vying for an important role in the Spurs squad. In the midfield pivot, Dier finds himself competing with Giovani Lo Celso, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks when everyone’s fit, whilst at centre-back, he has Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen, Juan Foyth and Japhet Tanganga.

Is Dier good enough?

Yes

No

This doesn’t make great reading for Dier, and whilst he certainly has his talents, the fact that he’s fallen down the pecking order is a cause for concern and now it’s time for the ex-Sporting man to look towards pastures new, with a transfer surely on the horizon.
