Opinion: International Tottenham star’s versatility shows why he should be starting at club level

|

For Tottenham this season, Mauricio Pochettino has been dealing with a midfield selection dilemma as the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks are all pushing to start in the club’s double pivot at the base of midfield.

However, during the international break, we all saw exactly what Winks can do when he’s given the freedom of midfield. The 23-year-old picked up what was just his 5th and 6th international caps over the break, and he bagged his first goal for his country against Kosovo on Sunday.

At club level, though, we’ve not seen as much of Winks as a lot of fans might like. The England man is one hell of a player and despite his age, he’s got it all in his locker when he plays in that deeper role. The youngster can dictate the tempo of even the biggest games, carry the ball forward himself and even put a tackle in when he needs to.

It was clear that he had a huge impact on the game over the weekend, and after he bagged the opener and shone throughout the player ratings were dished out, and they reflected how influential Winks had been, as Sky Sports gave him a 7/10 match rating.

Against Kosovo, Winks was one of the most impressive players on the pitch as he played in a different role. The midfielder was used as a #8 in the clash, being given the opportunity to drive forward from midfield whilst the more defensive Declan Rice sat in and did the dirty work for the Tottenham man.

Is Tanguy Ndombele our best midfielder?

Yes!

No!

The only issue with this is that Ndombele also thrives in this role, and Sissoko’s ability in transition is too good to be wasted, meaning that Winks is often used there for Spurs, even if we now all know just how good he can be when he’s used bringing the ball forward and advancing the play.
