Opinion: Inserting release clause in ace’s contract may be Tottenham’s only viable move

|

Tottenham may have no choice but to give Christian Eriksen a release clause if he’s to stay at the club past next summer. The Dane is still in talks with the club over a new contract but despite offering to double his wages, the release clause is a sticking point.

That’s the latest update, and it’s come via The Daily Mail. Whether or not it’s what the Lilywhites would be happy with is one thing, but if gets Eriksen to put pen to paper and keeps him happy for one more season before the club can cash in on whatever the clause is next summer then it has to be a good thing.

In the same Daily Mail article, they talk about the likelihood of a Tottenham move for Bruno Fernandes, and the thought of having both Eriksen and Fernandes in the same side, even if just for a year, is a brilliant one for the fans.

Harry Kane will be licking his lips if it comes to fruition, even if it would almost guarantee that Eriksen makes his way to Real Madrid or wherever else next summer. Inserting the release clause also justifies any wages that are agreed to be paid to the attacking midfielder.

Should Eriksen take the offer of £160,000 per/week, double his current weekly wages of £80,000, then the club can pocket a tidy sum next summer depending on any potential clause, then it will only help to bolster the club’s financial position next summer, although it does depend on the release clause.

Daniel Levy is certainly no pushover, though, and whatever happens, you can bet the Tottenham chairman will get the best deal in regards to Eriksen’s contract, whether that includes a release clause or not.
