Opinion: Imminent Tottenham signing is not what Mourinho needs but makes for great business

|

The need for new faces at Tottenham is evident. The Lilywhites all know that action needs to be taken so that Jose Mourinho can mould this side into a team he can work with and win silverware, and it looks like he’s making a start given the recent rumours.

The links are that Tottenham, whilst needing to sign a striker by most accounts, are going to bring in an attacking wide-man in the form of PSV’s impressive Steven Bergwijn and Football.London have conveniently put together all of the rumours in one place ahead of this potential move.

The Dutch winger is incredibly talented and has more than proven his talents with his boyhood club PSV in the Eredivisie. Whilst we’re yet to see whether he can adapt to the Premier League, on paper, this looks like one hell of a deal for Tottenham, and one that has emerged as an opportunity that Spurs can’t turn down.

The stats that the young attacker has been registering are mightily impressive this season, and it’s not just his goals and assists that make him stand out, although he has contributed five goals and ten assists in 16 Dutch league games this season (WhoScored).

It’s the numbers that we’re about to delve into that are incredibly impressive, though. Despite Bergwijn’s age, he’s averaging 2.3 shots, 2.8 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in the domestic league, and the fact he can play across a number of attacking areas on both wings and through the middle makes him an interesting prospect (WhoScored).

Steven Bergwijn...

Sign him

Not worth it

The Dutchman isn’t the striker that the Lilywhites have been baying for, but bringing him in does allow one of Heung-Min Son or Lucas Moura to occupy the role as a lone striker in front of three attacking midfielders, and this does look like a deal that could work wonderfully for the future of the club.
