Opinion: Frosty Pochettino comments don’t inspire confidence over Tottenham signing

|

Tottenham fans have already said their emotional farewells to Fernando Llorente, and whilst there was hope that he may stick around for a little bit longer for some fans, it now looks like Mauricio Pochettino has shut down any talk of that happening with a frosty response to a journalist’s question.

The Argentine, whose press conference was documented by Alasdair Gold of Football.London, gave his answer to a range of questions, talking at length about Heung-Min Son, Troy Parrott and Manchester United ahead of their International Champions Cup clash with the Red Devils.

However, when asked at the end about Fernando Llorente, with one journalist putting to Pochettino whether the Spaniard could be set to return to Spurs for this season, the Argentine had just a 12-word response, shutting down any talk of the 34-year-old’s return.

The exact words that Pochettino came out with were ‘I don’t know. I am not the person you need to ask’. We’ve previously seen that Daniel Levy seems to be the man behind the signings at Spurs, but for Pochettino to know nothing about the future of the striker seems strange.

With Llorente’s two-year deal expiring back in June, you’d imagine that the Lilywhites would have been keen to see him re-signed by now if he was going to be re-signed at all, so it looks like the Spaniard is gone, and he’s left some fantastic memories at Spurs.

The Champions League run last season would not have been possible without him, as Llorente scored the crucial goal against Manchester City, got a key assist against PSV and was used to bully the Ajax defence in that memorable semi-final, so whilst he’s not around to make more memories, the fans will still be delighted for his time with them.
