It’s sad to see Danny Rose playing in Tottenham’s reserves

|

It’s really sad to see what’s happened to Danny Rose at Tottenham. He was once one of the best left-backs in Europe, linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Barcelona, Manchester City and Real Madrid among others, but is now reduced to playing reserve-team football in North London.

The 30-year-old’s contract is up in 2021 and he’s expected to leave permanently in January. It’s unknown where, but Rose will be lucky to get much Premier League interest so might he have to go abroad?

Newcastle United, West Ham United, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton & Hove Albion were linked before the transfer window shut, but Rose’s only appearance this season has come in the U23s’ 2-1 defeat to Derby County (November 6) so his stock could hardly be lower.

No shirt number, omitted from squad, dumped in reserves

In mid-November 2019, Rose told the London Evening Standard that he was going to see out his contract at Tottenham despite the club not wanting him to stay. Daniel Levy told the England international that he had no future in North London months before, but Rose has dug in and is still here a year later.

Since joining from Leeds United in 2007, the 30-year-old has gone on to make 214 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals with 29 assists, but his last outing in our first-team came all the way back in January. Rose was left out of the matchday squad for the final six months of last season and was stripped of his shirt number weeks later.

Ahead of the 2020/21, Rose was forced to train away from the first-team and had Tottenham attempting to terminate his contract early, so it can’t be the best environment for him right now.

Where will he go in January?

Rose said he was open to a move abroad in September, so he might have offers to weigh up from clubs outside of England. Before the summer transfer window shut, Genoa were in talks with the left-back over a deal that never materialised. He was briefly linked with PSG too but the French champions opted against signing him.

Rose is unwanted by Spurs but not inundated with offers, he isn’t match fit due to the lack of playing time this season, and he has a low stock as a result. It’s sad to see.
