Opinion: Danish arrival could see Mauricio Pochettino loan out £21k-per-week Tottenham man

|

Juan Foyth could have an uncertain future at Tottenham if the Lilywhites sign Joachim Andersen this summer. The 21-year-old is already behind Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez in the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino and would have even more stiff competition for a starting place if the Dane arrived.

Foyth joined Spurs from Estudiantes in 2017 and has gone on to make 25 appearances in all competitions. The Argentine international racked up less than 900 minutes of Premier League football last season, however, which raises doubts about his long-term future. Foyth has three years remaining on his deal, but he was on the periphery in 2018/19 and could be again in 2019/20.

Andersen’s potential arrival would force Pochettino to take action – loaning Foyth out for a season is an option. The £21.5k-per-week defender is still young and has great potential, so he can’t afford to waste another year of development by being on the bench or in the reserves.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld will be out of contract in 2020 and don’t appear to be signing new deals, so Foyth may be in line for a promotion to the starting eleven if he impresses Pochettino next season.
