Opinion: Could crucial weekend goal kick-start key Tottenham man’s form?

|

Tottenham fans will not be happy with this weekend’s result. The Lilywhites needed an 87th-minute equaliser from Dele Alli to grab a draw at home to winless Watford who are still at the foot of the table. However, result aside, the fact that it was Dele who grabbed the goal could be crucial.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder is still an outstanding player with talent by the bucketload. The last 18 months, though, have been incredibly tough for the former MK Dons man. Before this weekend the last time the Tottenham man scored a goal was way back in January away at Craven Cottage in the Premier League, Transfermarkt.

Now, though, it could be time for Dele to turn his form around at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The midfielder is looking like the man who Mauricio Pochettino is set to turn to given that Christian Eriksen’s head isn’t the in the right place with the recent transfer speculation, with the latest update from The Daily Mail claiming that PSG are looking to hijack Real Madrid’s move for the Dane.

Getting back to Dele, though, the England man is such an impressive talent, yet his numbers the last few seasons have not fairly reflected his true abilities, as he’s managed just 28 combined goals and assists in the last two Premier League seasons despite managing 27 in just a single season in 2016/17, Transfermarkt.

The next step for Dele and Tottenham is to get three points on the board from a game as opposed to one. The chances are they’ll be looking to do that later today when Crvena Zvezda come to town, and if the Lilywhites’ young midfield man can get on the scoresheet again then it will be a brilliant start to the season from him.

However, keeping the form up and getting points on the board has to be key. Mauricio Pochettino will be as desperate as the players in the dressing room to turn things around, and whilst Dele is in a position to turn his form around, the club and the player could pick themselves up all in one go.
