Opinion: Coach’s words on ace who can ‘compete for the big prizes’ must force Spurs to make move

|

The club-record signing of Tanguy Ndombele this summer sent a clear message from Tottenham to the rest of the major clubs around Europe that Spurs are no longer afraid to drop serious money on top players.

Will Tottenham be active in the January window?

Yes! We have to be!

No! Daniel Levy won't spend

As figures from Transfermarkt show, Tottenham spent well over £100m in the summer transfer window for the first time since 2013, and now reports are emerging that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could be about to spend even more this season in January.

According to The Mirror, Spurs are lining up a £50m bid for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay, with the report claiming that the north London side are in the lead for the Dutchman’s signature, and Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman seemingly favours a move back to the Premier League for his star player.

Speaking to the press ahead of Holland’s EURO 2020 qualifier against Northern Ireland, the former Everton manager said via Football London: “You always hope that every player plays for the biggest clubs that actually compete for the big prizes. I think he (Depay) is the kind of player that should play at a club like that. If that’s in the Premier League or at any other big club, that would be great for him. But you have to ask him about his plans.”

Indeed, a move for Depay in the winter from Tottenham would be an ambitious move for the Premier League side who currently find themselves 14th in the league table, and these interesting comments from Koeman could be the push Spurs need to make a move for the former Manchester United number 7.

With Spurs in need of something new in the squad to revitalise the current crop of players, the introduction of Depay could be exactly what Tottenham need to instil confidence back into a team deprived of hope, and the Dutch international could be the key to bringing success back to the north London side.
