Opinion: Bright cameo from Tottenham fringe man is cause for celebration

|

Twice in the last week, Tottenham Hotspur have looked abject of creativity and devoid of ideas, and twice in the last week the Lilywhites have been improved by the introduction if one Erik Lamela from the bench and the Argentine’s recent form is something to celebrate.

The former Roma man has had a number of injury problems, but in the last week we haven’t seen a Lamela that has shown the burden of multiple hip, back and muscle injuries, as he’s provided a real spark in the last few games, something the Lilywhites have been desperate for.

Jose Mourinho has been very quick to doubt his side’s credentials without either Harry Kane or Heung-Min Son fit, but with Lamela getting back to full fitness and showing some real form there’s no reason why he can’t be the one to step up to the plate in the absence of a striker.

We know that Lamela didn’t score in either of the last two games, yet the Argentine did force the own goal that Antonio Rudiger scored for Spurs’ late consolation goal, and whilst things won’t be the same without Kane and Son, having Lamela at his best will certainly be an able temporary replacement.

In 23 appearances this season, with 11 starts and 12 substitute displays, Lamela has bagged four goals and three assists in all competitions (WhoScored), and his running, drive and impact on the rest of the team when he’s on the pitch is certainly something that can be highlighted as a major positive for Spurs.

Can Lamela make the difference in Kane and Son's absence?

Yes

No

Lamela isn’t a player who can step up and end the season with 20 goals in all competitions, but the buzz he provides on the pitch and the bite he has when winning possession back and going forward makes him a real talent, and if the Lilywhites are to qualify for the Champions League for next season, he could be absolutely key to making it happen.

Erik is a fine baller and likely goal-scorer.
Penguins wait forever to give foul against him, or not at all. Muscles are strained when opponent is holding/pulling when he is on a run, hence injuries.
I imagine if he was playing abroad, he would be tops.

I read recently that Lamela was going to be sold off at the end of the season? Not really understanding why we’d want to let go of a player who can clearly influence and change the pattern of games when played. Always gives 100% commitment to the cause!
