Opinion: As an exit nears we’re picking out our favourite moments from Tottenham hero

|

The last few months cannot take away from the career that Christian Eriksen has had at Tottenham Hotspur. The Danish midfielder may well be sleepwalking towards a move this window, and his exit looks very likely, but that shouldn’t mean his unbelievable service to the club should be forgotten.

Down the years since the Dane joined Tottenham from Ajax in summer 2013, he’s provided an incredible amount of magical moments. Some of the goals he’s scored will long be remembered by the fans, and here we’re going to take a look at some moments that stick out for us.

The first one we’ve picked was just Eriksen’s 3rd goal for the club and was his first of two headed goals for the club, as the Danish midfielder headed home at Old Trafford, opening the scoring against the Red Devils in what would turn out to be a famous 2-1 win for the Lilywhites on New Year’s Day 2014.

That goal would be just the first of many against some of the world’s biggest club, and on his birthday in 2016 Eriksen would go on to add to his tally for the club as he slotted home against Manchester City at The Etihad to complete a 2-1 win as the Lilywhites attempted to chase down Leicester City.

It wasn’t just in the Premier League, though, that the former Ajax man shone in. No, the Champions League also saw the full force of Eriksen’s creativity and ability to score wonderful goals, and during the 2017/18 season, there were two goals from the Dane that had Tottenham fans in dreamland.

The first of those goals came in the group stages at Wembley against Real Madrid. Tottenham had already raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a Dele Alli double, but when Eriksen’s deflected effort made it 3-0 on the night and created a moment in which no Spurs fan in the ground will ever forget.

In that very same season, the next goal that the fans got to witness in awe was a wonderfully struck free-kick away in Turin. The round of sixteen tie against Juventus may be remembered as a failure from Tottenham fans’ perspectives, but Eriksen’s free-kick in Turin to level the score at 2-2 was a moment that had fans believing they could do anything in the competition.

Back in the Premier League though, and possibly our favourite goal that Eriksen scored, came during a game that saw the Lilywhites end a whopping 28-year run without winning away at Stamford Bridge, and the goal from Eriksen was an absolute humdinger.

The Danish midfielder levelled the scores, cancelling out Alvaro Morata’s earlier header, with what can only be described as a rocketed shot from the outside the box that fizzed into the roof of the net over the head of Willy Caballero, leaving the Argentine with absolutely no chance and laying the foundations for Dele Alli to go on and net a brace in a 3-1 win.

When you look back over some of these goals, it becomes even clearer how influential Eriksen has been for Tottenham in his time in north London. The Dane has remained thoroughly professional during his time with the club, and to remember him for a few lethargic performances this season considering his history at Spurs is incredibly unfair.
