Onwards and Upwards!

Tim Sherwood may have been managerial Marmite and to a degree was the architect of his own downfall, but there was also a sad inevitability to yet another sacking.

The sad reality is that whoever gets the job for next season, he will still encounter many of the same problems that AVB, Sherwood and all of the other recent managers have had and unless we take a long look at our planning and those decision makers behind the scenes, we will always be fighting against ourselves and as a result always underachieve.

What the club have to do is to formulate a plan and stick with it. Once we have a Blueprint for the future, I also believe they need to make it clear to everyone that wishes to listen. This is hardly selling state secrets, but is is offering clarity and planning that at least allows fans and media to understand what and how the club plans to proceed over the next few years.

The fact that Franco Baldini is still at the club, would indicate that he is for now at least to remain as Director of Football, but after 12 months in the job, and fans and media still no clearer to knowing exactly what his role is and what decisions he makes and what the manager makes. Is this an ideal time for him to step up, show some of his supposed charisma and have a more public face. Daniel Levy is certainly not going to suddenly become the happy face of Spurs.

Once we get a new manager, what better than to see a press conference headed by Baldini, showing a positive and united front with the new man and at the same time make it totally clear as to who does what. Current bookies favourite Mauricio Pochettino is used to working with a DoF, as are a few of the other contenders, so lets take the chance to add clarity to the role and make everyones like easier.

Sticking with the DoF role, is this a time to see Daniel Levy step away from the football side of things and concentrate of the many off field issues that are far more based around his own skill set. If Baldini was the right man 12 months ago to oversee the football side, lets at least give him the room to breathe and do the job without what seems to be constant interference from Levy and a chopping and changing vision of what needs to be done. Levy does a superb job juggling the figures, but can we honestly say he has been a success when we look at the football side?

Lets look at the Spurs way. We all accept that we want CL football and to do it in the traditional way of playing attractive football. Financial restrictions compared to the bigger fish mean we probably have to be more inventive and develop our own players, but lets have everyone knowing the plan and singing from the same hymn sheet. You imagine that once Spurs develop a reputation for bringing through players over taking big spending decisions, top young players will see us as the right move, even if that is a medium term stepping stone.

So many managers in the last decade should be a badge of shame for Enic, but not learning from past mistakes should be the thing that finally makes everyone realise that it isn`t the failure of managers that is the problem, but that it lies much higher up and if we fail again, there really needs to be calls for Levy/Enic Out! over people mocking the failure of yet another manager…
