Tottenham confirm that Marcus Edwards has left the club to join Vitoria. The 20-year-old struggled for first-team football under Mauricio Pochettino and has opted for a permanent move elsewhere. Vitoria say Edwards has signed a four-year deal at the Barradão and has a release clause of £13.7m attached to his contract. The Portuguese Primeira club will get back 50% of any future transfer.
The England u20 international never lived up to his billing at Tottenham. He was expected to break into the first-team by now, but Edwards had made only one first-team appearance prior to his exit. He spent the last 18 months of his Spurs career on loan at Norwich City (January 15, 2018 – April 11, 2018) and Excelsior (August 30, 2018 – June 30, 2019) and was seemingly surplus to requirements this summer.
Edwards may have joined Vitoria on a free transfer too, with conflicting reports suggesting Tottenham cancelled his contract. With Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son for competition at senior level, getting minutes would prove a difficult task – even Georges-Kevin N’Koudou was ahead of the 20-year-old. Whether he can turn his career around at Vitoria remains to be seen.
