Official: Jan Vertonghen injury update

|

Tottenham have confirmed Jan Vertonghen will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Arsenal. The 31-year-old missed Wednesday’s clash with Chelsea due to a hip injury and was replaced by Davinson Sanchez alongside Toby Alderweireld.

Vertonghen has endured an injury-hit season, spending all of October and the majority of December with a hamstring problem. The centre-back made only two Premier League appearances between October and December but returned in mid-January and featured in six consecutive games.

He’s made 21 appearances in all competitions, 15 of which have come in the top flight and may not be risked due to Tottenham’s Champions League return coming on March 5. Vertonghen shone in the first leg of the last-16 clash, but it’s unknown if he can handle two games in a week just yet.

After defeats to Burnley and Chelsea, Spurs can’t afford to drop any more points in the league. They currently sit third in the table with 60 points from 28 games, nine adrift of leaders Liverpool. Tottenham are five points clear of fifth place but they have lost nearly 30% of their games this season.

If Vertonghen isn’t fit enough to play, Mauricio Pochettino can call upon Sanchez and Juan Foyth.
