North London derby could be 16th game Tottenham player has missed through injury

Tottenham have confirmed Eric Dier will miss Saturday’s North London Derby as he’s still building up his condition after an illness. The 25-year-old has missed 15 games through injury this season and the weekend meeting with Arsenal could be the 16th. He should return later this month, however.

Dier has made 21 appearances in all competitions but has racked up just 12 minutes of Premier League football in 2019. His last two outings for Spurs were against Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final (January 24) and Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round (January 27) – Tottenham lost both games.

Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko have built up an impressive midfield partnership in Dier’s absence, but Winks has a hip injury and could miss the derby as a result. Victor Wanyama or Oliver Skipp could be in line to start against Arsenal.

Dier hasn’t had much luck in recent months. He missed six weeks between December 2018 and January 2019 after having an appendectomy. The England international then picked up tonsillitis after returning from injury and he’s still recovering from it.

Mauricio Pochettino is currently without three midfielders and may be regretting not signing a replacement after Mousa Dembele’s sale…
