News: Tottenham really should not have let this player leave in the summer

|

A report has emerged that claims Tottenham Hotspur made a massive mistake in selling Kieran Trippier and not replacing him properly.

Trippier has flourished for Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone and as each game goes by the decision by Tottenham to sell him looks even more baffling.

For one Spurs only collected £20m for a right-back who just a year before that was rated at £50m and had Real Madrid checking on him.

Yes, he had a poor season but was that really a reason to jettison him with no proper plan to replace him?

The answer is increasingly looking like a no.

So far this season Spurs have used Kyle Walker-Peters, Davinson Sanchez and Serge Aurier at right-back.

None of them have particularly impressed.

Aurier is the best option Spurs have, and he should be good enough to see Tottenham through till January where a new right-back will have to be bought.

However, the Ivorian, who I have defended in the past, was hopeless against Bayern and Serge Gnabry ran riot against him.

Constantly finding space in behind and exploiting the former PSG man’s poor positional sense.

Trippier received a lot of flak last year, and he was told in the summer that his services would not be required, but surely Spurs should have had someone lined up who could replace the former Burnley man.

The decision not to buy a right-back last summer must surely go down as one of the stranger moves made by Daniel Levy in his time as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur, and now the whole club is suffering because of it.
