News: ex-Spurs star sinks Premier League rival

|

Liverpool’s 100% record was shattered on Tuesday as they fell to defeat at Napoli in the opening round of Champions League fixtures.

Liverpool went behind to a Dries Mertens penalty, but it was ex-Spurs striker Fernando Llorente who wrapped up the win.

Virgil Van Dijk handed the 34-year-old a gift, and he duly accepted it slotting the ball underneath Adrian.

Llorente’s celebrations were wild and passionate suggesting he saw this goal as revenge for the Champions League final – which he, of course, lost with Spurs.

Tottenham released Llorente at the end of last season, but they offered him a new contract, on reduced terms, that he rejected and eventually chose to sign for Napoli instead.

This was the Spaniard’s first goal for the club, and he could not have a wished for a better opponent to condemn to defeat.

Llorente always struggled to perform in the league for Spurs, but he was excellent in the Champions League for Tottenham providing some crucial goals and moments.

Unfortunately, in the final he could not do anything to impact the game – so he will no doubt enjoy this goal and result with his new club over the team who denied him a Champions League winner’s medal.
