Despite the uptick in Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking performances (not least our results and Premier League table improvement) following the arrival of manager Jose Mourinho, plenty of questions have remained about our direction, desire, our defence and overall performance levels, so plenty were hoping for a bit of a renewed statement as we travelled to St Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton.
What we got, however, was simply more questions.
Danny Ings gave them the lead 17 minutes into the first half and although we slightly edged the statistics, and asked a few more questions of their goalkeeper than they did ours, ultimately, we had nothing to show for it and few can begrudge Southampton all three points.
Losing Harry Kane to a leg injury late on only made a bad day slightly worse but the lack of punch in the game from us will infuriate many. Having had a penalty shout and the ball in the back of the net but seeing it scrubbed off for offside will provide little consolation.
Onto Middlesbrough.
