Midfielder ‘seriously thinking’ about leaving Tottenham, destination uncertain

|

Mousa Dembele has been linked with a departure from Tottenham for some time, with Tutto Mercato Web believing the Belgian midfielder could join one of Inter or Milan in Serie A. France Football (h/t Sport Witness) have talked up the prospect of him moving to the Chinese Super League, as his next transfer will likely be the last of his career.

Dembele is out of contract next summer and doesn’t appear close to putting pen to paper on an extension, but his next destination is currently unknown. If Tottenham are certain of his impending departure, they could cash in on the 31-year-old. Dembele has reportedly requested £2.6m-a-year in salary and £3m for his agent.

He’s been a fantastic servant to Tottenham, making 249 appearances in all competitions since making the move from Fulham. The Belgian international remains a key player under Mauricio Pochettino, featuring in 10 of Spurs’ 11 Premier League games, so he’d need replacing if this is to be his last season.

Unless Tottenham force him out the door in January, they’ll have no bearing on his future if no contract extension will be offered. Given the lack of spending over the summer and rising costs over the delayed stadium forcing Spurs to be thrifty in the transfer market, it’s unknown what type of budget they would have to sign a player in Dembele’s stead.

As a result, it’s likely they’ll wait until next summer before considering a replacement.
