Mauricio Pochettino should sign 26-year-old in Jan, Tottenham must offload duo – opinion

Mauricio Pochettino played down the prospect of spending in the January transfer window, but Tottenham do need some credible back-up to Harry Kane. Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson should be on their radar with the 26-year-old in fine form this season, and the sale of Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen could help to fund a move.

Wilson has contributed 13 goals in 17 Premier League games and would greatly improve the Tottenham squad. The England international has created 23 chances this season and has converted 21% of his shots. He also has excessive pace and could operate in a similar role to Heung-min Son for Tottenham. The striker is valued at £30m, but Spurs can raise the funds through sales.

Llorente is out of contract with Tottenham next summer and reportedly earns around £75k-per-week. If the Spaniard was sold in January, Spurs could save £1.9m in wages. A permanent transfer would raise extra funds for the London outfit too. He’s racked up only 151 minutes of playing time in all competitions, so Pochettino clearly has no need for the striker.

As for Janssen, the 24-year-old has 18 months left on a £1.8m salary and should be able to raise a good amount of money through his sale. Tottenham paid around £17m for his signature, but his last league appearance for the club was back in August 2017. If enough money can be generated, a bid should be lodged for Wilson.
